What Endorsements Can You Get as a CDL Driver?

As a CDL driver, you have the right to operate most trucks and heavy goods vehicles. However, if you want to drive a more specialized vehicle, like a tanker or a bus, you will need to obtain an endorsement.
There are six main types of endorsements a CDL driver can get. They are:
- H Endorsement: This endorsement allows truckers to operate vehicles that are loaded with hazardous materials (HAZMAT).
- N Endorsement: This endorsement gives truck drivers the right to operate vehicles that haul liquids or gasses (otherwise known as tankers).
- X Endorsement: This endorsement allows truckers to drive vehicles that haul HAZMAT within a tank.
- P Endorsement: This endorsement permits drivers to operate buses and other vehicles that can seat 16 or more people.
- S Endorsement: This endorsement lets CDL holders operate school buses.
- T Endorsement: This endorsement gives truckers the right to operate double and triple trailers.
The process of obtaining these endorsements generally involves taking a written exam and/or a skills test. To get a P or S endorsement, you may also need to submit to a background check.
The Benefits of Obtaining Endorsements as a CDL Driver
When a CDL driver obtains one or more endorsements, they enjoy two main benefits. They are:
1. More Employment Opportunities
Truck drivers are always in high demand. However, there are some jobs a trucker simply cannot do if they do not have the correct endorsement.
When CDL drivers obtain an endorsement, they make themselves more attractive to companies that primarily operate tankers, HAZMAT trucks, and other specialized vehicles. They might even create promotion opportunities with their current employer.
2. Better Compensation
The increased employability of truck drivers with endorsements means they typically make more money than the average CDL driver. It is not at all uncommon for truckers to increase their annual income by more than 25 percent after they obtain an endorsement.
The H, N, and X endorsements tend to be particularly lucrative.
