Types of CDL Driver Restrictionss

Most people know that a CDL driver can obtain endorsements that will allow them to drive more specialized vehicles, such as tankers, HAZMAT trucks, and school buses. What many members of the general public don’t know is that they can also receive restrictions that prohibit them from operating certain vehicles.

In this article, we’ll discuss the most common types of CDL restrictions.

How Many CDL Driver Restrictions Are There?

The exact number of CDL restrictions varies slightly from state to state. However, in most areas, there are seven main restrictions a trucker can have placed on their license.

Those restrictions are:

E Restriction

A CDL driver with this restriction is prohibited from operating a manual truck. This restriction is generally issued to people who perform their skills test in an automatic vehicle.

L Restriction

Truckers who have an L restriction may not drive a vehicle that is equipped with a full air brake system. This restriction is typically issued to drivers who fail to pass their air brake knowledge test.

M Restriction

This restriction means the licenseholder may only operate a Class B or C passenger vehicle. It is most often issued to Class A CDL holders who obtain their P or S endorsement in a Class B vehicle.

N Restriction

The N restriction indicates that the driver may only operate a Class C passenger vehicle. It is typically issued to Class B CDL holders who obtain their P or S endorsement in a Class C vehicle.

O Restriction

This restriction makes it unlawful for the licenseholder to operate a Class A vehicle with a fifth wheel connection. It is generally issued to drivers who take their skills test in a vehicle that has a pintle hook, gooseneck, or any other non-fifth wheel connection.

V Restriction

The V restriction indicates that the licenseholder has a medical condition that must be reported to the Federal Motor Carrier Administration (FMCSA). A CDL driver with this restriction can continue to drive commercially, but they are required to maintain their records with the FMCSA.

Z Restriction

Like the L restriction, the Z restriction prohibits the trucker from operating a vehicle that has an air brake system. It is typically issued to drivers who take their skills test in a vehicle that is equipped with a hydraulic brake system.
