The Dos and Don'ts of Maintaining Your Class A CDL

The Dos and Don'ts of Maintaining Your Class A CDLIf you want to maintain your Class A CDL, it is generally a good idea to do the following things:

Keep Yourself Fit and Healthy: To maintain your license, you need to stay healthy and undergo regular physicals. If your state believes you are unfit to drive, it may revoke or refuse to renew your CDL.

Drive Safely: If you want to enjoy a long career in trucking, it is crucial for you to drive safely at all times, even when you're off the clock. Should you fail to do so, you might begin to rack up points that will make it difficult for you to renew your license.

Obey the Law: If you commit a crime, the state may send you to prison or hand you a hefty fine. It can also choose to strip you of your Class A CDL. You are especially likely to lose your license if you are convicted of drunk driving or a serious felony.

You must not do the following things if you want to keep your CDL:

Use Drugs: During your routine physicals, you will be tested for drugs like cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines, and opiates. If you're found to be abusing any of these illegal substances, the state will most likely refuse to renew your Class A CDL.

Break Industry Rules or Regulations: The trucking profession has a lot of rules and regulations you must follow. The rules exist to keep you and the people around you safe on the job. Should you break the rules, you might lose your license.

Fall Behind on Your Taxes: In Louisiana, if you owe $1,000 in back taxes, the state has the power to suspend or revoke your CDL. States like New York, Massachusetts, and California have similar rules. If you don't want to lose your license, make sure you stay on top of your tax obligations!
