How Much Does It Cost to Get a Class A CDL?

Are you thinking about getting a Class A CDL? If so, you probably want to know how much it will cost.

The quick answer to this question is around $4,000 - $6,000. However, there are multiple factors that may increase or decrease this estimate, including:

1. Your Location

The cost to obtain a Class A CDL varies quite a lot from state to state and city to city. In general, schools in high-cost-of-living places such as New York and California charge more than schools in more affordable regions like the Southeast or Midwest.

Schools in rural regions also tend to be cheaper than schools near major metropolitan areas.

2. The School

The type of school you attend will play a substantial role in determining the cost you pay. As you might expect, public truck driving schools are almost always less expensive than private ones - but they also tend to have longer waiting lists.

Similarly, schools that have good reputations and impressive job placement records are usually quite a bit pricier than newer, less established schools.

3. Your Lodging Needs

If your driving school is a long way from home, you’ll need to pay for lodging. Some schools can provide you with accommodation, but it is almost always quite expensive.

The quality of the lodging offered by driving schools can also vary significantly from city to city. If your school does not provide you with a fully-functional kitchen, you may also need to budget for dining out a lot.

Class A CDL Eligibility Requirements

Money isn’t the only thing you will need to get your Class A CDL. Before you can start your truck driving career, you’ll also need to meet your state’s eligibility requirements.

In most states, this means you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a clean driving record, and
  • Have a DOT medical certification card
In many states, you may be deemed ineligible to receive a Class A CDL if you have:

  • A revoked or suspended driver's license
  • A history of careless or dangerous driving
  • Certain medical conditions (like diabetes)
  • Unresolved citations, or
  • A scheduled hearing on a moving violation
Most jurisdictions will allow you to obtain a Class A CDL with a felony conviction on your record. However, they may not let you drive certain vehicles (like a school bus).
