How Long Does It Take to Get a Class A CDL?

How Long Does It Take to Get a Class A CDL?

Are you thinking about getting a Class A CDL? If so, you are probably wondering how long the licensing process is likely to take from start to finish.

The answer, as you might expect, depends on a wide range of factors, such as:

  • Your Current Driving Level: Experienced drivers tend to get their CDLs much quicker than people who have only been driving for a year or two.
  • Your Training Program: A full-time training program will get you your CDL faster than a part-time course.
  • Your Willingness to Practice: The more time you spend practicing your driving before you take your road test, the more likely you are to pass on your first attempt.
  • How Quickly You Can Schedule Your Test: The waitlist to take a road test is longer in some regions than in others. The longer the wait, the longer it’ll take to get your CDL.

For most people, the process of obtaining a Class A CDL takes a couple of months.

Getting a Class A CDL: Understanding the Process

The process of getting a Class A CDL varies a little from state to state. However, in most areas, you’ll need to work through the following steps before you receive your license:

  1. Initial Training: Before you can start taking tests, you’ll need to complete driver training with an FMCSA-approved provider. This step usually takes about four to six weeks.
  2. Vision Test: To receive your CDL, you will have to prove you can see. The vision test is pretty quick. In most cases, it only takes a few minutes.
  3. Knowledge Test: The knowledge exam is the third step in the licensing process. Expect to spend a couple of hours on this. If you pass, you’ll be issued a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).
  4. Road Test: Once you pass your knowledge exam, you’ll need to take your road test. In many states, you have to wait at least 14 days after receiving your CLP to take the road test. The test itself only takes a few hours.

Once you work through these steps, all you need to do is pay the necessary fees, complete the required paperwork, and wait for the state to issue your Class A CDL.
