A Day in the Life of a CDL Driver

A Day in the Life of a CDL Driver

Are you thinking about becoming a CDL driver? If so, you might want to know a bit more about the day-to-day life of a trucker in the US. Luckily, the Logisticize team is here to provide you with all the details.

A Typical Day for a CDL Driver

A Typical Day for a CDL DriverA truck driver's life is all about safely delivering goods to customers in a timely manner. An average day looks a little something like this:

Early Morning: Truckers typically wake up very early in the morning. It is not unusual for them to get out of bed, grab a quick cup of coffee, check messages, and review the weather forecast at 4:00 am. They then take a shower, have some breakfast, perform their pre-trip inspection, and head out on the road by 5:00 am.

Morning: A CDL driver can log up to 11 hours of driving time per day. Most log about three to four hours in the morning before taking a quick break at around 9:00 am. They then spend a couple more hours on the road before taking an hour-long lunch break at approximately 11:30 am.

Afternoon: Truck drivers generally spend a few more hours on the road in the afternoon. They normally take another brief break to stretch their legs and ensure their load is secure at around 3:00 pm. During this break, they may also take some time to decide where they should spend the night.

Evening: During the evening hours, a CDL driver generally logs the last of their driving miles for the day before pulling into their truck stop of choice. There, they can work out, grab some dinner, call their loved ones, stream movies and TV shows, or read books. Some truckers also like to spend their evenings taking care of their paperwork and other administrative tasks.

Night: Truck drivers typically turn the lights out and try to get some sleep at around 9:00 pm. Most trucks are equipped with bunk heaters to keep them warm during the night if it's a little chilly out.

Of course, truckers generally have a great deal of freedom when it comes to planning their daily schedule. A CDL driver who prefers to get up late or take more breaks is almost always free to do so - as long as they can still drive safely, meet their goals, and comply with DOT regulations.
